Volunteering is an integral part of our national fiber in the United States because American history is based on community engagement and individual responsibility. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps, for example, a program sending American volunteers around the world to help others. As President Obama said earlier this year, volunteers exemplify the quintessential American idea that we can change things, make things better, and solve problems when we work together.
